Mean

A thirteen year old girl
became friends
with her bullies.

A journalist asked her to describe how,
after these girls had been cruel
for so long,
she was able to forgive
and become friends with them.

“What do you mean?”

“What are the characteristics of these girls
that make you like them?”

“They’re not mean to me anymore.”

    1. Thanks for your comment. It’s really interesting that the reaction most people have had to this piece is to feel happy that the girls became friends.
I think forgiveness is so challenging… and commendable.
But I do worry that this idea that “They’re not mean to me anymore” is not holding the bar high enough for a true friendship. I think that girls (humans) deserve more than an absence of loathing or bullying from their so-called friends.
