Mary of the Rusted Lock

I became fascinated with religious iconography when we lived in Mexico. Mary, in particular, stole my heart and I have been looking for her ever since.

In Europe, she turns up constantly.

This particular Virgin Mary appeared in a dusty shop window in the Cinque Terre town of Monterosso al Mare. This was on my first trip to the Cinque Terre… just me and DP… in December of 2006.

There is nothing folksy about this Mary; she is clad in the traditional light blue robe she wore in the illustrations of my childhood. She appears calm and ready to help those in need. I am, however, a little worried about the lock on that window. That lock looks like it could really slow the mother of a deity down.
