Postcard from The Cinque Terre, Italy

December 8, 2007

DP and I are visiting the extraordinary Cinque Terre with nine of our students. The Cinque Terre, located on the Mediterranean, is made up of five Medieval towns connected by hiking trails and a railroad. No cars, no horns, no pollution. We are staying in the blissfully tiny town of Vernazza which has just 1000 residents… plus 11 (noisy) foreigners for the weekend.

This afternoon we hiked the gentle 20-minute walk known as the Via dell’ Amore, or walkway of love, from Riomaggiore to Manarola. About halfway along the walk we found some fantastic graffiti painted onto the rocks. Here is an example of what LOVE looks like on the Cinque Terre.
