Young Adult Fiction Question

I must enlist the help of my reader-ly friends this evening.

I have been given about 48 hours to choose one new novel for grade 7 and one for grade 8. The current grade 7 texts are: “The Giver” (good… a keeper), “The Miracle Worker” (yawn… sorry but it’s true and I’m OLD) and “The Hobbit” (not even remotely possible for my grade 7 kids… or the grade 8 students for that matter).

In grade 8 we are reading Avi’s “Nothing But The Truth” (a mistake I shall not make twice), “The Chocolate War” and “Catcher in the Rye.”

The grade 6 teacher has her kids reading “The Outsiders”, “Star Girl”, “Holes”, “Freak the Mighty” and a couple of other novels I LOVE. So they are all off the list of potential grade 7/8 books.

I have been talking with our librarian and researching and reading… and I have listed some possibilities below… but I would love to hear YOUR picks.

Possibilities for grade 7:
“The Goose Girl” by Shannon Hale
“Walk Two Moons” by Sharon Creech

Possibilities for grade 8:
“Lovely Bones” by Alice Sebold
“The House on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros

THE QUESTION:
Of all the novels in the whole wide world… which one would YOU choose and why?

Thanks all!
